About Domex

Outdoor sleeping bags keeping Kiwis warm for over 40 years

In 1979, Aotearoa’s population stood at a mere 3.1 million, the mighty Commodore was the car of choice and New Zealanders were first introduced to Domex sleeping bags.

Based on Auckland’s North Shore, the philosophy was simple from the start - ‘produce top-quality outdoor sleeping bags that people want and will recommend to others’.

A lot has changed over the past 40 years but the philosophy remains the same: Domex is proudly Kiwi-owned, taking pride in producing outdoor sleeping bags designed by New Zealanders for New Zealand conditions.

Designed by Kiwis to suit NZ conditions

Domex understands New Zealand’s unique climate requires a diverse selection of outdoor sleeping bags to meet a wide range of conditions. Our unique landscape offers a multitude of conditions, sometimes four seasons in one day, where temperate marine climates can neighbour harsh alpine chills.

Key to the success of Domex has been our ongoing partnership with adventurous New Zealanders who use our products in all manner of challenging environments, providing feedback and advice on new developments. Open communication and collaboration has resulted in the most bespoke and durable range of outdoor sleeping bags on the market.

The outstanding Halo range has been designed with input from Greg and Willie Duley from NZ Hunter Adventures. By listening to our customer feedback, we continue to refine our products to give New Zealanders outdoor sleeping bags that keep pace with their adventures.

Changing Times

For many years, Domex sleeping bags were proudly kiwi-made. Domex were one of the last sleeping bag manufacturers still operating in New Zealand, but in May 2007, the decision was made that in order to keep Domex pricing competitive, production needed to move offshore. Thanks to leading edge technology, ongoing research and high standards of quality control, Domex still maintain the reputation as a quality brand producing quality products.

In 2012, Domex changed ownership, relocating to Napier. But the one thing that has never changed is our ongoing commitment to producing a range of sleeping bags for you that will cope with the diverse range of conditions in our country.
